I Pray to the Birds

“I pray to the birds.
I pray to the birds because I believe they will carry the messages of my heart upwards.
I pray to them because I believe in their existence, the way their songs begin and end each day -the invocations and benedictions of earth.
I pray to the birds because they remind me of what I love rather than what I fear.
And, at the end of my prayers they teach me how to listen.”

Cat House

You Need:
Two or More Paper Bags from the Grocery Store, Scissors, Glue, Tape, Cardboard, Construction Paper, Glasses and Bowls to Trace Around, Pencil
Pictures from Magazines, Kitty
Instructions:
While your paper bags are still flat, trace around a bowl on the bottom of each bag. Open up the bag and cut out the circles. These will be the doors. On the sides, trace around small drinking glasses and cut out. These will be the windows.
Cut strips of cardboard to fit inside the paper bag to give it extra support. You especially want to support around the bottoms of bags where the doors are.
Place two bags top to top, fitting one bag up inside the other about and inch. Glue or tape in place. Add other bags by cutting holes and taping new bags in place. Decorate with pictures cut from magazines. Add extra support to doors and windows by cutting out circles of construction paper and gluing around the circles cut.

A Cow's Life No Picnic

Most dairy cows spend their entire lives chained to metal poles on concrete floors inside dark barns. They are allowed limited movement twice a day, when they are herded into "milking parlors" and hooked up to milk machines. Many cows are injected with bovine growth hormone to boost milk production to unnaturally high levels, causing infectious udder diseases and additional stress to the animals. In order to maintain their high milk production, the cows are impregnated each year.

Most of their male offspring are torn from their mothers at birth and chained by the neck in tiny, filthy wood crates to keep their flesh soft. They are fed a liquid formula that is deficient in iron and fiber to keep their flesh pale. These conditions breed diarrhea, respiratory disease, and anemia. The calves are deprived of natural food, fresh air, and their mothers' love. After 16 weeks, they are dragged to slaughter and served as veal.

Winter Pet Safety

  • Keep your pet away from anitfreeze which is poisonous.
  • Don't leave your pet outside unattended when the temperatures drop.
  • Short-coated dogs need to wear a sweater/coat in the cold.
  • Many dogs need boots during bad weather.
  • Prevent ice balls by cutting hair away from dog's feet.
  • After a walk on a salted sidewalk, wash your dogs paws.
  • Keep your cat indoors in the winter.
  • Outside cats will seek warm car engines. Be careful starting your car.

Chained Pain

Chained dogs kill as many children as do firearms, and more than falls from trees, playground equipment and fireworks accidents put together. Since last July, 52 people, including 33 children, have been attacked by chained dogs or those who have broken their tethers. Four kids, one just 34 days old, were killed in the attacks.

Kitten Dumper in the Woods

An Ohio woman who dumped thirty-three kittens in the woods was sentenced to the same treatment by a judge. The former animal rescuer will spend the night in the woods when the temperature is expected to be 20 degrees.

Cat Bites

Each year between 3 to 5 million Americans are bitten by animals with between 5-15% of the bites from cats. Half of the cat bites are on children. Fifty percent of the cat bites become infected. Take a cat bite seriously.
